Attack Only When the Conditions Are Right

Strong amateurs don’t attack every pin. They attack when the conditions allow it. This is the difference between a 78 and an 83.

1. The Three Conditions for Aggression

You attack only when all three are true:

Condition 1 — The Lie Is Clean

No:

  • Flyer rough

  • Ball above/below feet

  • Mud

  • Bare patches

A compromised lie = conservative target.

Condition 2 — The Yardage Is in Your Stock Window

If you’re between clubs or need a manipulated shot:

  • Play safe

  • Aim for the GMZ

Stock yardage = green light.

Condition 3 — The Miss Is Safe

If the miss:

  • Leaves an easy up‑and‑down

  • Avoids short‑siding

  • Avoids hazards

…you can attack.

If the miss is dangerous, aggression becomes stupidity.

2. Aggression Is a Reward, Not a Default

You earn the right to attack by:

  • Hitting the fairway

  • Having a clean lie

  • Having a predictable miss pattern

  • Having a safe bailout

3. Use “Tier‑Based Aggression” on Greens

If the pin is:

  • Front → aim middle

  • Middle → aim middle

  • Back → aim middle

You attack only when the miss stays on the correct tier.

4. Know When to Dial Back

Wind, slope, and pressure narrow your margins. When margins shrink, aggression disappears.

5. Aggression Should Lower Stress, Not Raise It

If you feel tension over the ball, you’re not in attack mode — you’re in ego mode.
