The Breakthrough Series
Move from hope-based golf to margin based golf. Build structure - Eliminate doubles. Break 85.
IN THIS LESSON
Stop Aiming at Perfection. Start Aiming at Scoring Windows.
Mid handicappers often hit great shots — but they also hit shots that ruin rounds. The difference between an 88 and an 82 is not ball‑striking. It’s target selection. Margin‑based golf gives you the widest scoring window, even when your swing isn’t perfect.
1. Understand the “Scoring Window”
A scoring window is the area where:
Your dispersion fits
Your miss is safe
Your next shot is simple
Your worst outcome is still playable
This is where you should aim — not at the flag.
2. Stop Aiming at Flags
Flags are:
Small
Precise
Surrounded by trouble
Designed to tempt you
Aim at:
The centre of the green
The fat side
The widest landing zone
You’ll hit more greens by not aiming at them.
3. Choose Targets That Absorb Your Miss
If your miss is left:
Aim right of centre
Choose targets with room left
If your miss is short:
Take one more club
Aim deeper into the green
4. Use “Margin‑Based Aiming”
Ask: “If I miss this by 10–15 metres, am I still okay?”
If the answer is no, change your target.
5. Build Your Round Around Predictable Misses
Your miss pattern is your scoring foundation. Margin‑based golf turns that pattern into a weapon.
