Doubles Disappear When You Plan the Miss Before You Swing

Mid handicappers don’t make doubles because of bad swings — they make doubles because of bad decisions. This lesson teaches you how to eliminate the mistakes that inflate your score.

1. Identify the “No‑Go Zone”

Every shot has one place you cannot miss:

  • Short‑side bunker

  • Water

  • OB

  • Trees

  • Deep rough

Your target must move away from this zone.

2. Choose Clubs That Remove Disaster

If a club:

  • Brings water into play

  • Can reach trouble

  • Produces wild dispersion

…it’s not the right club for that shot.

3. Stop Forcing Greens From Long Range

From 160+ metres:

  • Aim for the Good Miss Zone (GMZ)

  • Play for the next shot

  • Avoid bunkers and hazards

You don’t need greens in regulation to eliminate doubles.

4. Use the “Par‑Save Triangle”

When you miss a green:

  • Leave the ball in front

  • Leave the ball on the wide side

  • Leave the ball with green to work with

This triangle eliminates short‑siding — the #1 cause of doubles.

5. Take Your Medicine

If you’re in trouble:

  • Chip out

  • Reset the hole

  • Protect bogey

One smart decision saves three strokes.
