IN THIS LESSON

Distance Control Is Your Scoring Weapon

Strong amateurs lose more strokes from front‑back misses than left‑right misses. Controlling depth is the key to more birdie looks and fewer short‑sided disasters.

1. Know Your True Carry Distances

Not your best shots. Not your “ideal” numbers. Your real averages.

This is where strong amateurs separate themselves.

2. Build a 3‑Number Yardage System

For every iron, know:

  • Stock carry

  • Soft carry

  • Hard carry

This gives you flexibility without manipulation.

3. Use Trajectory to Control Depth

Higher = shorter Lower = longer

You can control depth by:

  • Ball position

  • Club selection

  • Swing length

4. Avoid the “Front Miss” at All Costs

Front misses:

  • Bring bunkers into play

  • Leave impossible chips

  • Kill birdie chances

If in doubt, take one more club.

5. Play to Depth Windows, Not Pins

Instead of aiming at a point, aim at a zone:

  • 5–7 metres deep

  • 5–7 metres wide

Your dispersion fits better into windows than bullseyes.
